Dagger

Specifications

Main design feature: invertible wedge.  Weight: 1.875 lbs.  Batteries: 5 cell, 6 volt, AA Nickel Metal Hydride.  Armor: .050 thick Titanium.  Sozbots dual speed controller.  Futaba 113ip 3 channel PCM 75 Mhz receiver.

Build information

Robot "Dagger" was built out of a modified Tyco RC car named Dagger.  The original radio controlled car electronics were removed but the motors, gears, and wheels were kept.  Most of the plastic was also removed.

The 6.0 volts DC was thought to be enough based on the Tyco toy voltage, and the ability of the receiver to take a maximum of 6 volts.  Upon initial robot testing it we determined that the toy was being controlled with an on/off type drive.  When the motors were driven with a speed controller they was significantly less drive power than expected.

The new solution will be to raise the input voltage, and use the battery eliminator circuit (BEC) available on the Sozbot speed controller to power the receiver at 5VDC.  The motor gear box combination currently stall out at 4 amps using 6 volts.  The speed controller is rated at 5 Amps per side, therefore I will need to install a fuse to protect the speed controller from locked rotor amps of over 5 Amps.

Due to the slow stalled take off speed, Dagger is desperate need of a battery voltage up grade.  The new battery packs will be 9 cells sized at 2/3 AA each with a total voltage of 10.8 volts.

The armor is .050 thick Titanium.  It was cut in the garage and bent using a bench vise.  The lesson here to be learned in that a minimum bend radius of about 1/4 of an inch helps to prevent cracks.

Battle History

Dagger has only seen one real fight.  It was skewered by robot "Mildly Infectious" during a rumble at MURC.  Mildly Infectious had a tapered reamer used as a spike.  The spike entered thru the wheel spokes and we were stuck for the rest of the match.  Click on preview to enlarge.  The little bot on top is Ice Scraper driven by my son Cole.
